So Cliché: My Mid-Year NBA AwardsThese things are so cliché, but a ton of fun. This is the real half-way point of the NBA season, so why not give out a few awards. Rookie Of The Year - Tyreke Evans EvansNo brainer. No one thought Evans would be this good this fast. Good on offense, and surprisingly good defensively as well. At last count he was averaging 20 points and five assist as a point guard and is the main reason why the Sacramento Kings are the biggest surprise team this year. If (in the future) the Kings ever get smart and make him a full time shooting guard, his career could blossom. Runner Up: Brandon Jennings Sixth Man Of The Year - Jamal Crawford CrawfordCrawford has found a home in Atlanta. This team doesn't ask him to play much defense (a weakness) they only ask him to come off of the bench and score buckets (a big strength). 17 points per game and 35% shooting from three has helped the Hawks become a serious threat in the East. Runner Up: Carl Landry Defensive Player Of The Year – Rajon Rondo RondoEveryone credits the “Big Ticket” for the lock-down defense the team ...
Are The Nielsen Ratings Even Real?Believe it or not I started out believing that this would be a post about how great DVR is and how important it is in my personal television consumption, but while thinking about that, I turned my focus the way television shows are rated. One day a few years back while sitting in a media relations class in college (one of my many failed life experiences) a professor explained the way Nielsen Media Research's system worked and I became immediately fascinated. I became skeptical of this company's methods and weary of falling into the same trap as everyone else. What is the trap? The trap in my mind was believing that these people had any more of an idea what was being watched than I did. I knew of a lot of shows that were quality programs that were canceled because Nielsen said they didn't have a large enough audience. How could Nielsen know who was watching what and when? My family was sent a letter to become a “Nielsen Family” when I was 20, but we never fully committed. Other than that letter, I had never known anyone else who participated, or had ...
Pacquiao, Clottey to rumble at Cowboys StadiumARLINGTON, Texas — (AP) Guys wearing jeans and cowboy hats ran through dry ice and past the Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders, sparklers firing from the tips of the flagpoles they carried. Michael Buffer gave his signature introduction, the music blared, the highlights rolled and, finally — walking through the same tunnel the Cowboys use to enter and exit their home turf — out came boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao. No, this wasn't a test run for Pacquiao's March 13 welterweight fight against Joshua Clottey in the $1.2 billion Cowboys Stadium. This was merely the news conference kicking off the hype for a bout being billed as "The Event." "This is going to be the Super Bowl of boxing," said Freddie Roach, Pacquiao's trainer. Not really. That would've been the hoped-for matchup between Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr., which was scuttled after Mayweather outlined a drug testing plan Pacquiao wouldn't accept. Had that fight come together, it would have been in Las Vegas. So as far as Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is concerned, things worked out just fine. "It did," Jones said, smiling. "This gave us an opening. We were very aggressive. We were pretty quick to make a deal." Pacquiao's promoter Bob Arum was smitten by the stadium during negotiations ...
The Rock Provides More Details On His WWE ReturnThe following is from James Caldwell and PWTorch.com: Former WWE champion “The Rock” Dwayne Johnson says he wants to return to WWE for a guest-hosting role or to wrestle a match only if he can “rip up” writing for the current TV product and tap into the Attitude era with an edgier product. Johnson shed light on what he’s meant the past few months when he has said he wants to create something special beyond just guest-hosting one episode of RAW during an interview with Live Audio Wrestling. “I want to use the platform as a host to literally rip things open. There’s so much stuff we can do,” Johnson told John Pollock of LAW. “We’re going to create an incredible show, an incredible Raw. I’m doing another movie, but after that, we’re going to create something special, unique, something badass for the fans. Talking to Vince (McMahon), whenever that’s going to be, we’re going to have a great time.” Johnson echoed what he said on ESPN last week that he wouldn’t rule out wrestling, but only if he can turn the writing upside down and create a compelling storyline leading to a match. “I accomplished everything I wanted to accomplish in wrestling, so I ...

Report: Broadcasters’ woes could spell trouble for free TVNEW YORK – (AP) For more than 60 years, TV stations have broadcast news, sports and entertainment for free and made their money by showing commercials. That might not work much longer. The business model is unraveling at ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox and the local stations that carry the networks' programming. Cable TV and the Web have fractured the audience for free TV and siphoned its ad dollars. The recession has squeezed advertising further, forcing broadcasters to accelerate their push for new revenue to pay for programming. That will play out in living rooms across the country. The changes could mean higher cable or satellite TV bills, as the networks and local stations squeeze more fees from pay-TV providers such as Comcast and DirecTV for the right to show broadcast TV channels in their lineups. The networks might even ditch free broadcast signals in the next few years. Instead, they could operate as cable channels — a move that could spell the end of free TV as Americans have known it since the 1940s. "Good programing is expensive," Rupert Murdoch, whose News Corp. owns Fox, told a shareholder meeting this fall. "It can no longer be supported solely by advertising revenues." Fox is ...

DreamWorks’ Martin Luther King film back on trackLOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Plans for a feature film about civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. appeared back on track on Tuesday as DreamWorks Studios said it has hired Oscar-winning screenwriter Ronald Harwood to pen a script. DreamWorks announced in May that it had acquired life rights for the slain Nobel Peace Prize laureate, marking the first time a major biographical movie about King had been authorized by his estate. But the project, to be produced by Steven Spielberg, quickly bogged down over squabbling among his three children over who had the authority to speak for the estate. A lawyer for two of the children, daughter Bernice and son Martin Luther King III, said then that his clients had not been consulted on the DreamWorks deal and that their brother, Dexter King, chairman and CEO of King Inc., had proceeded on his own. However DreamWorks, in announcing Harwood as the screenwriter, indicated that the dispute has been resolved, saying the motion picture was "authorized by the King estate to utilize the intellectual property of Dr. King to create the definitive portrait of his life." The King siblings are shareholders and board members of the estate, which they formed in 1995 with King's widow, Coretta ... (PWInsider.com) – WWE has changed the Elimination Chamber pay-per-view name back to No Way Out for fans in Germany. This was likely done out of concern for the “Chamber” name being seen as politically incorrect in the country. - As noted before, WWE officials still aren’t sure what to do with the ECW Title. While ECW is going away, the belt may be kept around in some way. Some within WWE are lobbying for the belt to be kept around but the final decision will be Vince McMahon’s. Those in favor of keeping the belt feel that it can still be used as an attraction for secondary pay-per-view undercards.

CM Punk earned his spot in the Chamber by defeating Batista on a count out. It was interesting how Batista lost as he just stood in the corner once the bell ring, waited and finally just left the ring and headed to the back, giving up his spot in the Elimination Chamber match. BUENOS AIRES (Reuters) – Argentina’s president recommended pork as an alternative to Viagra Wednesday, saying she spent a satisfying weekend with her husband after eating barbecued pork. “I’ve just been told something I didn’t know; that eating pork improves your sex life … I’d say it’s a lot nicer to eat a bit of grilled pork than take Viagra,” President Cristina Fernandez said to leaders of the pig farming industry. She said she recently ate pork and “things went very well that weekend, so it could well be true.” Argentines are the world’s biggest per capita consumers of beef, but the government has sought to promote pork as an alternative in recent years due to rising steak prices and as a way to diversify the meat industry.

One U.S. expert said the epidemic has “one foot in the grave,” and there are many reasons to believe there won’t be another wave later in the year. For one thing, the virus has shown no signs of mutating. The vaccine against it is effective. And roughly half the people in the U.S. probably have some immunity because they were infected with it or got vaccinated.

“I see in the news that a couple of my good friends got a free ride the other day and a little fine to go with it. I understand why this is news-Chris Jericho and my boy Hurricane Helms are on a TV show that is watched by hundreds of millions of people around the globe-getting arrested is big news even if it is a minor deal. And believe me, from what I have heard this is a minor deal. But come on…there were no drugs and both guys were smart enough to plan not to drive while under the influence. In these days of celebrities that aren’t as big as these guys and some bigger doing drugs and being completely irresponsible this is akin to a parking ticket. Most people out there if they were surrounded by friends and doing what they love would be guilty of having a few too many at times. This is all this was. Repeat…no drugs and no one was driving. Just a few too many and in the wrong place at the wrong time.

We all know Patty has went off the deep end, but she was holding her fakeness together pretty well, until Friday that is. She has been off her meds for a couple months now, and seeing a reminder of Jack and Dr. Peterson’s wedding has sent her past the last buoy! She introduced herself to Paul as Dr. Peterson. I have no doubt that my earlier post: Y&R: 12/29/09: Nick is Soooo Predictable! which states that Patty will somehow switch places with Emily, only to hold Emily hostage somewhere, while Patty ends up marrying Jack, will end up happening. Of course that has been done before (Sheila/Lauren), but I doubt that will stop the writers from repeating this tired theme. The only difference will be that in this case, the state is already holding Patty “hostage” in the mental ward. Patty will start this out like she did today, pretending to be Dr. Peterson. She will dye her hair to match Emily’s again, and one day, when Emily comes for a visit, there will be a switcheroo. The real Dr Peterson will say “I’m Dr. Peterson…”. Noone will believe her, because Patty’s been saying that already for a week now! (Or will have by the time this Friday rolls around, and Jack and Emily prepare for their Valentines Day wedding!) Watch and see if this is not how this plays out! Just don’t forget, I called it last month!

Benz, who made her Housewives debut on Jan. 31, was originally slated to appear in three episodes but will now appear in an undetermined number of additional episodes. Executive producer Bob Daily told Zap2it that her character, a former stripper named Robin, will be getting very close with one of the housewives. “Robin will be getting into a friendship,” he said. “That maybe turns into more than a friendship with Katherine [Dana Delany]. Katherine has had kind of a rough year and I think she’s open to new experiences.” Check out videos of Julie Benz

When the 30-second ad finally airs in the first quarter of Sunday’s CBS telecast — at a cost estimated at $2.5 million — it’s expected to show the devout quarterback and his mother, Pam, sharing the story of how she gave birth to him in the Philippines in 1987 after spurning a doctor’s advice to have an abortion for medical reasons. In the past two weeks, as news of the ad spread, it has generated a vast, often passionate national discussion — the subject of countless newspaper columns, blogs and tweets, and fodder for dozens of advocacy groups to spar over abortion, women’s rights and free speech.

MOSCOW (Reuters) – An unemployed construction worker alarmed Kremlin guards when he tried to barge past them for what he said was a meeting with the Russian president to become his son-in-law, a popular daily reported on Thursday (1/21). He was promptly informed that Dmitry Medvedev only has a single teenage son and was then taken to a psychiatric hospital on Wednesday evening, Komsomolskaya Pravda said. The native of Russia’s volatile Muslim Dagestan region, 35, whose name was only given as Bakhtiyar, was seeking to improve his fortunes by marrying into Medvedev’s family after he lost his construction job during financial crisis, the paper said.

ATLANTA – (AP) If the U.S. swine flu epidemic isn’t over, it certainly looks as if it’s on its last legs. While federal health officials are not ready to declare the threat has passed and the outbreak has run its course, they did report Friday that for the fourth week in a row, no states had widespread flu activity. U.S. cases have been declining since late October.
